The murderer of the two senior members of the Lyons crime outfit on the Costa del Sol was a member of the rival gang, the Daniel gang, based in Glasgow, said Spanish cops.On 31 May, Ross Monaghan, 43, and Eddie Lyons Jnr, 46 were murdered in a bar in Fuengirola.Three days after, Police Scotland ruled there was no intelligence to indicate the murders were the bi-product of a gang war that has seen a spate of attacks, shootings and firebombings in both Glasgow and the capital, Edinburgh. However, on Tuesday Spanish National Police declared that Monaghan and Lyons Jnr were picked out by a professional assassin of Daniel crime group.Monaghan and Lyons Jnr were affiliated to the Lyons family, an influential organised crime syndicate located in west of Scotland. The targeted attack occurred when they were watching the champions league final and drinking at Monaghans Bar which is located along the beachfront of the town.Novo, chief Supt of the provincial judicial police unit in Malaga, told a press conference in the city on Tuesday. The top cop reported that the killings had been done in a high level professionalism.Chief Supt Agudo Novo explained that the suspect was an "internal member of the other gang that was Daniels gang" who had carefully planned on the shootings.According to him when he was seated and drinking in the outside table of the bar, Lyons Jnr was shot and killed. But it was by then that he exposed the weapon of the gunman that jammed allowing Monaghan to make an escape attempt in the bar.
Monaghan was followed by the killer, whose face was covered with cap and a scarf, and shot him twice when the shots proved fatal. He then fled the scene with a route that had some few security cameras amongst them.Chief Supt Agudo Novo claimed that the wanted gunman fled Spain to Portugal by land before getting a flight to Leeds.Upon going back to England, he altered address three times until he was traced to Liverpool through an international arrest warrant.Researchers are of the opinion that he was planning to escape the UK to a paradise island where extradition treaty could not be applied, although they did not specify which island it is.Chief Supt Agudo Novo stated that such double murder was perpetuated by a professional hitman and a member of a rival gang of one of the victims. Here we do not deal with some hit man on hire but with a member of an opposing gang Daniels that ends up killing two men of an opposing gang.
Spanish police were optimistic of more arrests but thought that the gunman had been acting alone, detectives said.Ch Insp Juan Antonio Sillero, of the expert Udyco Costa del Sol police force that was also in charge of the operation to track the alleged double murderer, said he reasoned both Monaghan and Lyons Jnr were gunned down to rid the world of their presence.According to him, he said that the purported attacker modified his physical appearance such as shaving the face so that he could not be recognised.Riley was not formally identified by Spanish police, although they did admit that the man (suspect) wasn Barriga was English, not Scottish.Riley was produced on Saturday in Westminster Magistrate Court of London where he was remanded in custody as the authorities seek an extradition request. Long-running feudScottish investigators have been assisting the Spanish police with the search, giving details of the backgrounds of the men.The dueling Lyons group have furiously been at loggerhead with the adversarial Daniel family.Monaghan has also been involved in the death of gangland thug Kevin Gerbil Carroll who was gunned down in the car park at a Glasgow supermarket in 2010.This murder was tried and he was later acquitted because there was no evidence in fact it was done in the presence of lunchtime shoppers. In 2017 Monaghan himself was shot in the shoulder when dropping his daughter off at school in Glasgow. It is thought that sometime after that incident he moved to Spain.Lyons Jnr was also a victim of shooting and was injured in 2006 in an attack that was suspected to have been done by Carroll. There has been a series of violent attacks between the two groups to the tune of 20-years.Police Scotland subsequently made a statement that had no intelligence that the killings had been connected to a vigilante campaign in the east and west of Scotland within its central belt.Since March, more than 40 people have been arrested as part of a run of violent incidents.
